A comment on One Roadway to Carry Them All

Does it seem that at times the bicycle cases have such shifting stories. We see them and sometimes they do weird things, but they are bikes and we are in big cars. It's a knife in a gun fight when there is a collision. As you so well know, early investigation is vital.

A comment on Yet Another Cyclist Fatality in North Carolina

I would like to have heard whether or not this cyclist was using head and tail lights as required by law. We cyclists need to expect and demand our rights to the road, and at the same time we have to earn the privilege by obeying all traffic laws. To be treated like traffic, we have to act like traffic.<br /><br />Every traffic fatality saddens me, because almost always someone could have acted differently to avoid the death. How do you teach that there are no "do-overs" in driving? Safety must be intentional; it is no accident.

A comment on Update: Arrest Made for Greensboro Cyclist's Hit-and-Run Death

Unless the Durango is the only vehicle the woman has access to I can't understand why she was released under any amount of bail or bond. The crime she was accused of is such that anyone on the roads that she might get mad at is subject to random violence and mayhem, at any time. The cyclist she hit was on the opposite side of the road from her and was in no way affecting her as she was driving until she crossed the road to kill him. <br /><br />The equivalent would be catching a freeway sniper and then letting him out on bond, something that would never happen. People that are suspected to kill other people at random should never be allowed out of jail until and unless they are proved to not be the killer(s).

A comment on British Woman Sentenced to Jail in Texting-While-Driving Fatality

That's a very interesting idea, Justin. You're right in assuming cell phone companies would never go for it, but outside the box ideas like that are just what we need to find solutions to these kinds of problems.

A comment on British Woman Sentenced to Jail in Texting-While-Driving Fatality

It would be easy for cellular network providers to disable text function while moving. The provider could monitor the "pass off" rate from one receiver to the next to determine how fast a person is changing location and disable text functions accordingly. Sure, it would also disable text function for car passengers as well as public transportation users, but this is a small price to pay to reign in this wanton abuse of technology. Don't expect providers to do this, however, since it will result in a decrease in their revenue.

Thank you for posting that video, it's a real eye opener. People who text and drive ought to be thrown in jail along with the drunk drivers.

A comment on 3 Seconds to Greater Highway Safety

In addition to maintaining the right following distance (as an aside, my son helps count the seconds between us and the car in front), another way to improve driving safety is to improve your brain performance. There are three main capabilities that lead to safe driving – body, vision, and mind. Starting in our 30's our brain performance slows. That is of concern because of the strong link established in the medical and science literature between safe driving and cognitive ability. The good news is that recent studies show that brain performance can be improved at any age with the right mental exercises (just like physical fitness improves the body). <br /><br />I am the CEO of Posit Science and we recently introduced DriveSharp, a brain fitness software program recommended by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. It contains proven technology to help people be safer behind the wheel by training the brain to think quicker and react faster. For more information and a free online demo go to <a href="http://www.drivesharp.com" rel="nofollow">More ... </a>

Pierce this is really interesting. I have never seen this analysis and I agree that following too close is at the heart of most of the thousands of car crashes I have seen come into my office over the years. I applaud you for talking about preventing automobile accidents.
