Because of the confluence of many major interstates and highways in the Piedmont Triad area, our firm sees many cases where driver fatigue plays a part in an accident. Today's accident on U.S. 29 may be another instance of driving while sleepy.

The News & Record is reporting that the driver of the Toyota Landcruiser which crashed on U.S. 29 told troopers he fell asleep while driving. An eighteen year old young man who was a passenger in the vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries when the Landcruiser rolled over multiple times. The driver and another passenger are reported to have sustained minor injuries.

The three young people were traveling from Ohio to attend a soccer tournament in which the driver's brother was participating. According to the responding trooper, the driver said they had been on the road all night and he fell asleep.

Sadly the trio were less than one mile from their destination -- Greensboro's Bryan Park.

This report comes just a day after N.C. State linebacker Nate Irving was seriously injured in a one-car crash in which he may have fallen asleep while driving.
