Early this morning drivers were trapped by flash flooding on several streets in downtown High Point. Centennial and Commerce both flooded so badly that drivers were trapped in their vehicles. Fox 8 News reports that a woman had to be rescued from her car on Centennial Street. Flooding can happen very quickly, and "flash flooding" is often shrugged off as not a big deal, but these conditions can be serious.

According to the NOAA:

Just six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock you off your feet, and a depth of two feet will float your car! NEVER try to walk, swim or drive through such swift water. STOP! Turn around and go another way.

If it seems unsafe, it probably is. Some very good advice from FEMA and the NOAA on what to do if you find yourself caught in a flash flood can be found here. When driving, never assume that you can drive through standing water on a road. It could be a lot deeper and be moving much faster than it appears to be. If you hear a warning regarding flash flooding in your area, take it seriously, and pay attention.
