In an even more tragic turn to the Ocracoke fireworks explosion, that took the lives of four people last Saturday, it has been brought to my attention that the woman who died in the explosion was a single mother. Lisa Simmons of Goldsboro, NC, was the single mother of an 8-year-old son.

A trust has been opened in his name, and I encourage anyone who is able to make a contribution on his behalf. The account has been set up with Wachovia. Simply tell them you want to make a deposit to the Trust account of Avery Jackson Simmons or give them this account number: 1010233955827

The sole survivor of the accident, Marquez Holland, continues to receive treatment at UNC Hospital. And underwent surgery for his injuries on Tuesday. "A doctor at the burn center told the AP that Holland is expected to recover but will need extensive therapy."

Why should anyone care that a mother of a dependent child was killed?

First let me say thank you to all of those who have offered your support following this tragic day. It has certainly been a difficult time as we have attempted to begin accepting life without my sister. As for little AJ,he is 'settling' in. He understands his mom will never be coming home - just not "why". We all struggle with that understanding. Having never met Mr. Egerton or a single member of his firm....I want to extend my hertfelt gratitude for your concern for AJ's wellbeing as well as that of my entire family. Our hearts will be slow to mend but with the kindness and compassion from those who have surrounded us, the road will be a bit smoother. Thank you again.

Just so that my comment isn't misunderstood; I do care and believe others should care. But what I attempted to do by posing the question was to get people to consider the changes those dependent children will go through and the struggles they will face in life without their mother. That as a single mother, we don't know that the father is involved with the child and if he doesn't care to be in the child's life, the rest of the family will have to pick up where the mother left off. Having faced the death of my father at age 12 I can appreciate what the child and the rest of the family will go through. Hopefully this clarifies my previous comment.
